Basic Guidelines for Setting Up Artwork

Raster Images

Raster images are made up of pixels, small blocks of color that combine to form an image. These images are often captured with a digital camera, scanner, or downloaded from the internet. Unlike vector images, the individual elements in a raster image cannot be separated or altered. When enlarged, the resolution decreases, causing the image to be blurry or pixelated.

Vector Images

Vector images are created using nodes, which are points along computer-drawn lines that can be curved or straight. These lines form shapes that can be resized without losing resolution. Unlike raster images, the individual components can be separated, colors can be changed, and resizing does not affect quality. However, it's important to check that a file is truly vector-based, as bitmap images can sometimes be saved in a vector format without actually being vector art. Common vector file formats are .eps, .ai, .cdr, and .pdf.
